Matthew Broussard Wins the 2012 Houston’s Funniest Person Contest

Posted in comedy contests, houston, houston's funniest person contest, jokes, stand up comedy on June 22, 2012 by John Wessling

On his exact 1 year anniversary of ever getting on stage to tell jokes, Matthew Broussard pulled off an amazing come-from-behind victory.

He needed to win the night to win the contest, and with the help of a massive contingent of supporters, that’s exactly what he did!

Results of Final Night 2 (of 3) of the 2012 Houston’s Funniest Person Contest

I was extremely impressed with the overall quality of this show and how hard the 8 finalists competed. This was a very tough night for judges, but a great night for the audience.

Easily the best turn-out of the 3 rounds of #2012HFP that have been held at the new HCU HQ at Baker St Pub in Rice Village.

Because of Father’s Day and vacation time, scheduled judges dropped like flies in the hours leading up to the show, as a result we got by with only 5 judges. Because we need at least 4 counting scores for each competitor, only the low was dropped instead of the usual high/low drop.

Results of Final Night 1 (of 3) of The 2012 Houston’s Funniest Person Contest

Posted in comedy contests, houston, houston's funniest person contest, jokes, stand up comedy on June 15, 2012 by John Wessling

The field has significantly narrowed, and the set lengths just jumped from 5 to 10 minutes. And as a result, things got REAL Thursday night at The Comedy Showcase.

The overall quality of the show was amazing, every contestant brought their A-game and it showed in the audience and on the judges scorecards. The average score from each judge was in the mid 30’s out of a max 45…it was 18 in the preliminaries.

This was our last night at The Comedy Showcase for #2012HFP, and it was a very pleasurable experience for everybody involved. I’d like to extend a special thanks to Danny Martinez & Laura Hiebeler who went out on a limb to bring HFP into the Showcase for the first time ever.

Honestly, without their support, especially after the sudden and untimely demise of Sherlock’s as HCU HQ, the 2012 Houston’s Funniest Person contest would not have happened. It has been great to see the Showcase full of Houston comics again…our apologies to the waitstaff & bartenders for being in the way!!

Competition makes everybody better, and it showed on stage in FINAL 1 of the #2012HFP

Reminder on the scoring for the Finals…there are 3 shows, in which all 8 finalists will perform. The 2 highest scores of the 3 nights for each contestant is their final score. At this point, even after 1 completed show, all 8 contestants can still win the title of Houston’s Funniest Person.

Jana Guest from stillvisionsphotography.com took great pictures of the show.

Results of Final WILDCARD, Finalists of 2012 Houston’s Funniest Person Contest

Barrett Goldsmith beat Justin Thompson in regulation tonight to advance into the 8th spot of the Finals of the #2012HFP

Justin Thompson had a great run through the contest, and deserves a ton of recognition for, if nothing else, the HUNDREDS OF MILES he drove for all the nights as he performed throughout the contest.

In years past, Justin was ineligible to compete in the HFP, as he lives in Beaumont Texas. This year, he has performed and competed very admirably, representing those from the newly expanded Greater Houston Region who were able to compete this year, for the first time ever in the #2012HFP.

I was one of these guys myself, getting into Houston comedy from Victoria originally, and I’m proud of the hard work and heart Justin displayed in the #2012HFP.

Here are your 8 finalists of the 2012 Houston’s Funniest Person contest.
