2011 Houston’s Funniest Person Contest

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Registration for the 2011 HFP contest is now open!

These are the details, as sent to me by Ted Vincent at the Laff Spot.

The 2011 Houston’s Funniest Person Contest will be held at the Laff Spot Comedy Club Champions; 8905 Louetta Road, Spring, TX 77379.

The contest is open to ANYONE living in Houston who has not previously won.

The contest starts May 19, 2011 and run through June 23, 2011. Show dates are as follows:

May 19, 2011 1st Round 8 PM
May 26, 2011 1st Round 8 PM
June 2, 2011 1st Round 8 PM
June 9, 2011 1st Round 8 PM
June 16, 2011 1st Round 8 PM
June 23, 2011 Finals! 8 PM

Each comedian will have up to 20 FREE tickets for the 1st round to invite their friends, family or complete strangers to watch them perform. Tickets will be available for purchase should you advance to the finals. You will be required to bring audience members to watch the show for each round you participate in. There will be a 2 item minimum inside the show room for each person.

The entry fee is only $25 cash due by May 15, 2011.

Each contestant should be prepared to do 3-10 minutes of material based on number of entries and round.

To enter, call the Laff Spot Comedy Club at 281-655-7777 and speak with Ted Vincent or sign up with him at any open mics. Provide your name, phone number and e-mail address.

Never mind any gripes or complaints you may or may not have about the details of the contest, I recommend entering and doing your absolute best to win. We will have special HFP blocks at the Houston Comedy Union open mic, for contestants to practice their set and get tips from former winners and judges.

1st Ever Houston Comedy Union Super Bowl of New Jokes

The Super Bowl of New Jokes starts 30 minutes after the completion of SB45 at Sherlock’s River Oaks in the Houston Comedy Union showroom. Admission is free, call (713) 521-1881 to reserve tables during the game.

Contestants must use 100% new material written since November 22nd, 2010. Sets must be 4 minutes long and no longer than 7. After 7 minutes is a 1 point deduction on all judges total scores, after 8 minutes is an automatic DQ.

There is a $10 cash buy-in before the show; 1st place gets $200, 2nd place gets $100 and 3rd place gets $50. Judges scores and notes will be posted after the show.

The 2011 Super Bowl of NEW JOKES!

ANNOUNCING A NEW COMEDY CONTEST FOR HOUSTON COMICS!!

...OF NEW JOKES!!!!

On Super Bowl Sunday, after the game, the Houston Comedy Union will have a 15 comic throwdown for a $200 winner-take-all cash prize…the catch is, you can only use jokes written AFTER November 22nd 2010.

So get a clean sheet of paper out, and start writing some new material for the HCU 2011 Super Bowl of NEW JOKES!

Sets will be AT LEAST 4 minutes long, no longer than 6:59, ALL JOKES must be brand new. New tags to old bits are not eligible. ANY use of old material will get you DQ’d!!

The honor system is in place here, the idea being this will be a great chance to create new material for our old, tired & busted acts. If this goes well, and that is ENTIRELY up to the rank and file of the HCU, I can see this becoming a yearly tradition that helps break our collective logjams of creativity.

Certain local pros will be invited, depending on how many accept the challenge, that will determine how many amateur or at-large OR STAND-BY spots are available that night. There will be no more than 15 contestants the night of the Super Bowl.

More details will be released soon, but don’t worry about that now, worry about writing new jokes!
